On this classic 8-day overland tour, the sights in and around Lhasa and the adventure of the trans-Himalayan drive back across the desolately beautiful valleys of Central Tibet will leave you inspired by the rich religious heritage and spiritualism of the Tibetan people, and overwhelmed by the spellbinding landscapes of the Roof of the World.

The flight from Kathmandu to Tibet is laded with spectacular view of the Himlayas . You will be totally mesmerized by the beauty of the mountains and your overland drive out journey is fantastic and special experience. It is adventurous. You get to see the ancient Tibet and modern China in the process of blending together. It is one of the most remote parts of the world with unique and enchanting culture. The journey is in high altitude region where you travel at elevation above 3600 meter (12000 ft.) above sea level most of the time. The spectacular view of the Himalayan range from the north and monuments in Lhasa would mesmerize anybody.

This overland journey will leave you spellbound over viewing the landscape and the beauty of the mountains you will see as you drive. You get to see Mt. Everest from a different perspective. We stop at Shigatse to see Tashilhunpo monastery. It is the most important monastery outside Lhasa. We stop at Gyantse to see the golden pagoda or Palgor Chorten considered as one of the most famous monument in Tibet. The chorten was built in 15th century for worship only. The top of the pagoda is made of copper heavily gilded with gold. On the last day of the travel we drive along the shore of Yamdrok-lake known as “Turquoise Lake.” The road gradually climbs up to 4786 meter Kamba-la (pass) and descends to the valley. The drive from the floor of the valley is spectacular all along the bank of Brahmaputra river, past yak skin boat and giant carved Buddha, through Tibetan villages and then into the valley that leads to Lhasa. As you approach Lhasa you get first glimpse of the golden roofs of the Potala Palace. Fly back to Kathmandu to catch your onward flight

Most of Tibet, including Lhasa, is at an elevation of more than 3658 meter (12000 feet). The sight of pilgrims prostrating themselves in front of Jhokang must be seen to be comprehended. Tibetans from remote part of the country makes their pilgrimage to Lhasa. It is pilgrimage of their lifetime. As you go around Jokhang temple, Lhasa’s cathedral, you come across with pilgrims prostrating themselves, tall Khampas with red braids in their hair, Chinese tourists, and traders selling goods that you cannot imagine.

The flight over the Himalaya makes spectacular crossing rarely seen anywhere in the world. The lush green colour in Nepal slowly fades away and arid and dull gray plateau appears which in turn turns into blue sky as you land at Lhasa. The highest mountain in the world, Mt.Everest, and another 8000-meter peak of Mt.Makalu dominates the breathtaking view.

Itinerary

Day 1 Fly to Lhasa. Arrive Lhasa, transfer to Hotel Upon arrival in Lhasa, your local guide and driver will meet you at Gonggar airport, drive about 65km to Lhasa city, check in the hotel. Please go slow and have a good rest today in order to acclimatize the high altitude. It is helpful to drink more water. Free day.

Day 2 Sightseeing tour in Lhasa: Visit - Drepung monastery, Jokang temple and Barkhor Bazaar - In Lhasa
Visit the Drepung monastery. This is the largest monastery in the world and once housed 10,000 monks and nuns. It was built in 1419 and the second, thrid and fourth Dalai Lamas lived and were entombed here. A visit to the kitchen of this monastery is a must. Look out for the washing machine in which the monks mix their butter tea. Next stop will the Jokhang Temple. This is the holiest shrine in Tibet and houses a golden statue of the Buddha. You then visit to the Barkhor Bazaar outside the Jokhang monastery. This is the bustling flea market where you can buy vouvenirs and meet other tourists.

Day 3 Sightseeing tour in Lhasa: Visit - Potala, Norbulingka summer palace and Sera monastery - In Lhasa
Visit to the Potala Palace is awesome. The Palace of the Dalai Lama, a treasure of Tibetan culture was, till 1965, the seat of both religion and politics in Tibet. It was built in the 7th century by Tsongtsen Gampo as a fort and later renovated by the 5th Dalai lama in the 17th century to its present specifications. Visit to the Narbulingka, the winter Palace of the Dalai lama built in the 18th century would be the next attraction in your sightseeing tour. Next you will visit to Sera Monastery, a preserved monastery of white-washed walls and golden roofs.

Day 4 Depart via Yamdrok Lake to Gyangtse, Visit Gyangtse Kubum Stupa & Pelkhor Chode Monastery. In Gyangtse.
After breakfast drive up to Kambala pass which is over 5000m, from there you will have a glimpse of Yamdrok-tso there, which is one of the three holy lakes in Tibet. Then keep driving to Gyantse, visit the famous Kumpum stupa (Pelhkhor Choede Temple) in Gyantse, the most stunning architectural wonder in Tibet.

Day 5 Drive Gyangtse to Shigatse
Drive Gyangtse to Shigatse, En route visit Shalu Monastery, visit Tashilhunpo Monastery and Shigatse Market. In the morning visit Tashilunpo Monastery, then we drive to Shigatse for overnight there.

Day 6 Drive Shigatse to Shegar
Drive Shigatse to Shegar, En route visit Sakya Monastery.
It is one of the typical Yuan Dynasty style of resembling castles. There are a lot of historical articles in the monastery, among them are found a lot of the imperial certificates, gold signets, crowns, costumes bestowed by the Yuan Dynasty emperors. It has over 10,000 volumes of Tibetan books on astronomy, medicine, calligraphy, and history. So the Sakya monastery enjoys the title ‘the second Dun Huang Cave.

Day 7 Drive to Zhangmu, En route visit Milerapa Cave, Zhangmu Hotel
Drive to Zhangmu. Zhangmu town is located in the border with Nepal is a very different place from the other ones you see on the way. All year round it is green with rains most of the time. You will think it is out of Tibet, as there are Sherpa people and Nepalese speaking a different language here.

Day 8 Walk across friend ship Bridge and drive back to Kathmandu.
Drive to the Friendship Bridge of the border and go through the China customs. Our guide will see you off at the Kodari of the Tibetan side. Transport would be waiting for you to pick up and transer to Kathmandu which is 114km, about 4 hours drive.

Note: The above itinerary and schedule is guideline only. It is subject to change due to logistic, local, technical, weather and other condition beyond our control.

In monsoon season part of the road from Lamasangu to Kodari can be disrupted due to landslide. In such situation it is often necessary to walk for several hours. In winter snow can disrupt the road that goes through narrow pass from Zangmu to Nyalam.
