Chopta Valley is a very famous tourist hotspot in North Sikkim known for its varying hues. Famous as the valley of flowers, the Chopta Valley is popular for its riot of colors during summer months. On your way to the valley, you can see the tall trees of Lachen area slowly disappearing and smaller shrubs becoming more prominent and wadding the area. This valley is unexplored and untouched, as a very few tourists travel to this destination despite its popularity. Nature lovers and wildlife lovers will enjoy travelling to this splendid valley and spotting many rare species of animals, plants and birds.
Several trekking enthusiasts also travel to Chopta Valley, as the place is the perfect spot for trekking. The valley is positioned at an altitude of 13200 feet and there are many activities like hiking and angling that you can try here. Several water sports by the river are also enjoyed by adventurous tourists every year. With each turn, each valley, each rivulet trying to outdo the other in the scenic beauty that it offers. Few places come close to the virgin appeal of Chopta Valley (13200 ft), just 20 minutes drive from Thangu.
The valley is frozen during the winter and provides opportunity to walk over the frozen rivers. The riot of colours during spring belies this aspect, though. An adventurous trek through Chopta valley leads to Muguthang valley at an altitude of 15500ft, another unseen destination in the greater Himalayas.
This is a high altitude trek so proper acclimitization is necessary along the way. You will walk through the green land passing by variy of Rhododendron , blue poppies and primulas in an awesome bloom. The view of Mt. Kanchunjunga is marvelous.
How to Get There: From Kathmandu, take the one hour flight to Bhadrapur (the nearest Nepalese airport to Darjeeling), drive to Kakarvitta (Nepal/Indian boarder 34km), to Silguri (36km) and to Darjeeling (77 km, about 2 ½ hrs drive). Darjeeling is also connected by road with Sikkim (120km) and Bhutan (200km). Darjeeling is about 90 km from Bagdogra, the nearest airport, where schedule flights operate from New Delhi, Calcutta and Guwahati The nearest rail heads are Siliguri and New Jalpaiguri (88km) which are connected to Calcutta, New Delhi, Guwahati and other major cities in India.
