PUT NEPAL IN YOUR 'TO VISIT LIST'

BEST TIME TO VISIT IN SPRING & AUTUMN

Explore Nepal

A trek or hike in the mountains of Nepal is not a wilderness experience. It is rather a cultural and nature experience. It is a journey through various ethnic cultures, religion and geographical diversity of this small landlocked country. It is famous for God, Goddess, temples, brave Gurkha soldier, and climbers; of course the gleaming Himalayan range and Mt. Everest. There are rich varieties of flora and fauna within a limited area. Its topography starts from lowest elevation of about 100 meter in Terain plain to 5000 meter in the high mountain terrain. High peaks are from 6000 meter to Mt. Everest at 8848 meter above sea level. The mountains in the middle range are dotted with numerous villages. They are interlinked by footpaths. You use these networks of footpath made by local people to travel from village to village.
The people in the villages are friendly and hospitable. Depending upon season you come across local people in their distinctive ethnic dress and cultural festivals. On major trade routes like in Annapurna region you are likely to meet traders with caravan of mules, porters carrying construction and development materials and soldiers going home on leave from the army. The awesome Himalayan peaks will always remain with you giving fresh air and nostalgic feeling. You will be amazed to find the great contrast in hard life in the mountain and, happy and smiling face of the people. A trek in the mountain of Nepal always gives you time to reflect and think about your own life style; the trek may change the way you look at life. The watershed area and the ridge of the surrounding hills of Kathmandu valley has several view-points that give fantastic views of the Himalayan range and opportunity to get first-hand experience to meet local people. In the dry season - autumn and spring, there is always chances to meet marriage parties, ceremonies, religious procession and cultural activities.
Short hike and trek can make suitable combination with sightseeing tours, jungle safari and rafting program. You can choose what you like to add on in your program and itinerary.
A day-walk starts from the nearest road head, hike up a ridge and continue to walk up and down the hill, through villages, monasteries, schools and forest. It is never more than 2000 meter unless you take a flight to remote place like Lukla in Everest or Jomsom in Annapurna.
In Kathmandu Valley we use road network to reach various starting points of hike. Though road are not as smooth as you like to have but it gives access to the area you want to visit.  Nagarkot, Changunarayan, Dhulikhel in the east. Towards north-west you can start your trek from Budhanilkantha, Shivapuri or Kakani. In the north east the road goes to Sundarijal and Sankhu. In the south the road goes to Godavari and Tikabhairav. These roads extend beyond the places. Most of these places can be reached in an hour drive. We use these networks of paved road for our short treks around the rim of the Kathmandu valley. You can always starts and end at any points depending upon length of the hike you want to take with friends and families.
The other best short hikes are in the foothill of Annapurna, Langtang, Gosaikunda and Helambu areas. These areas are closer to Kathmandu; about 6 to 7 hour drive. Gaurishankar area near Jiri. It is another prime location for a short trek though the drives takes 9 hours.  Langtang and Gaurishankar provide close-up view of high Himalayan mountain. These places have very interesting cultures and beautiful mountain-view amidst nature. There are Buddhist monasteries, oak and rhododendron forests in almost in all the above areas. Spring is especially good time to trek when wild flowers are blooming.
The short treks are suitable for all age group and physical fitness. Differently able person can enjoy the walk and experience; we have done this for a group of Israel war veterans.  There are 24 short treks to choose from, or we can help you choose a suitable one.

After the trip you will certainly agree, like so many enthusiasts and travelers, that Nepal is a walker’s paradise.

PUT TIBET IN YOUR 'TO VISIT LIST'

BEST TIME TO VISIT TIBET - JULY TO OCTOBER

Tibet is a vast country. It is often referred as TAR (Tibet Autonomous Region) or Xizang in China. It is a very well known for its unique form of Buddhism. For centuries Tibet has maintained its unique culture and religion. The political system of Tibet was always hinged on Dalai Lama and his incarnation. The tour to Tibet is a fantastic and special experience. It is the combination of ancient Tibet and modern China. See amazing monuments, temples, monasteries and pilgrims prostrating around monasteries. The development activities taking place since 1985 has transformed Tibet.
The average elevation of this vast land is 4000 meter (13,123 ft.).Compared to the area it has very low population. As per 2010 census total population is at 30, 12,166.
The world is changing very fast. Much faster than in the past centuries. The moment of conquest and discovery has become a history. Before it is too late now is the time to enjoy the delight of the unique culture and the landscape of Tibet. The amazing vistas on this dry and inhospitable land, situated on the roof top of the world, will change soon. Tibet is at the verge of drastic change. Tibet is a spiritual place. Combination of Bonpo, Tantric and Buddhism has created Tibet something of mystic land. You have to see it to comprehend.  About TIBET: Read more
Lhasa (elevation 3612m), capital city of Tibet, is the religious, cultural and economic center of Tibet. It has many important monasteries. Among them Drepung is the largest. Built in 1419 it is the resting place of second, third and fourth Dalai Lama. Jokang temple, built in 7th century, is the house of golden statue of Buddha. Barkhor Bazar around Jokang temple is interesting place to see day to day life of Tibetan. The Potala Palace is landmark of Lhasa. This awesome palace built in the 7th century was residents of Dalai Lama. The palace was home of 13th Dalai Lama. It has hundreds of rooms full of fantastic frescoes painting and Buddhist statuary. It is worthwhile to visit Norbulingka built in 18th century – winter palace of Dalai Lama, and Sera monasteries - founded in 1419. The Sera monastery with white buildings that sits at the base of a rocky hill belongs to Gelupa (Yellow Hat) order.
The other well known monasteries outside Lhasa are Tashilhunpo in Shigatse. This monastery built in 1447 is the most important monastery outside Lhasa. It is the seat of Panchen Lama who is 2nd in rank to Dalai Lama. In Gyantse there are Kubum stupa and Pelkot Chode (Palgor Chorten) monastery. Travel further through the beautiful deep blue Yamdrok lake to see these sites in Central Tibet. The extension overland journey to the north base camp of Mt. Everest where take you to the fabled Rongbuk monastery. The other interesting place beside Lhasa is Yarlung Tsangpo valley. It is the cradle of Tibetan civilization. Visit Samey monastery. Samey is the oldest monastery, built in 779 AD, that belongs to Red head school and Yumbulakhang
The well known pilgrimage place for Buddhist, Bonpo and Hindus alike is Mt. Kailash. To Tibetan it is Kang Rinpoche (precious jewel of snow). It dominates western landscape of Tibet. Mt. Kailash is a sacred place for all -Hindus, Bonpo and Buddhist alike. Hindu believes that the scared mountain is the abode of Hindu God Shiva. Though names are different but devotion of all faiths is to the same God. The devotees walk and prostrate around 55 km mountain path to purify their sins. It is once in 'a life time' religious experience. This mountain is everything for everybody in whichever way considered and worshiped.
Mt. Kailash is at the elevation of 4500 meter above sea level. It is at the highest elevation on the Tibetan plateau. The distance from Lhasa to Mt, Kailash is about 2000km. It has paved road that stretched across vast dry and barren land. The other alternate is to travel from Kathmandu to Nepaljung - a border town in Nepal, and take flight to Simikot. From Simikot trek or charter helicopter to Hilsa. Cross a high 4000 meter pass to Hilsa, walk across the border to Tibet and travel by jeep to Taklakot (Purang). Next day travel overland to Darchen. From Darchen the pilgrimare around Mt. Kailash begins.
Tourists must join a tour group; it is the rule that has no way around. Tibet Travel permit, transport with driver and a tour guide are mandatory. Summer is the best time to visit though in some places in overland travel rain may disrupt travel plan. In winter the weather is rather harsh.
The road and bridge to Kodari border is still in disrupted condition. The April 2015 earthquake in Nepal had damaged the road and bridge on both side of the border. It is less likely to be active very soon. For trade an alternative route via Kerung, the unused old trade route further west of Kodari, is in use right now. But this road connecting main high way to Kathmandu is still in desolate condition. The Chinese has not opened this route for tourist. China plan to develop Kerung pass as an alternative to Kodari border as the main trade route from Lhasa. Due to this reason Kailash Himalaya Trek has reorganized all its tours to Tibet. Now all tours of Kailash Himalaya Trek start or end at Lhasa or Simikot.
All ‘Join in Fixed Departure Tibet’ tours includes two night hotel accommodation and sightseeing in Kathmandu. Normally two nights in Kathmandu is necessary to prepare travel permit to Tibet. Latest news is that tourist travelling from Kathmandu to Tibet cannot get Tibet permit with urgent fees. That means they need at least 4 nights in Kathmandu. However, it is possible to get Tibet permit with China Visa in advance if you enter Tibet through other entry points. This rules may change at any time without advance notice.  It is also possible to take direct flight to Lhasa from Chengdu (China).

"Do no dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment"

"Replace anger with love and you will be happy"

Manang is a remote mountain district of Nepal that borders with China’s autonomous state Tibet in the north. Manang’s remote village Manang in Nesyang Village Council is now observing the region’s popular Yartung festival.

Locals organise horse racing as part of the festival, considered the biggest on in the village. Youths have been racing their horses for the past five days. Monday is the last day of the festival. People aged 16 to 55 years are participating in this annual ritual.

The villagers appoint a leader to manage the festival. The person is termed Nandi in local language. The horse racing takes places in the vast land in between Bhakra and Manang.

‘Yartung’ is a Tibetan language. Karma Gurung, a Mhithewa (chief) of Manang, says ‘Yar’ means monsoon and ‘to’ means horse. The word Yarto later became Yartung.

According to Gurung, the origin of the festival is not known and it marks the end of cultivation season when people have leisure time.

Nesyang Village Council Chairman Kancha Ghaley shared that people visit Manang Gumba on the last day of the festival and receive blessings from Lama.

According to Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) Chief Babulal Tiruwa, Yartung is the ancient cultural festival of the locals. He said the festival not only preserves the culture but has also contributed in tourism of the region.

Happy Gai Jatra to everyone (Festival of Cows)

The festival of cows (Gai Jatra) is one of the most popular festivals in Nepal. It is said people in ancient time started worshiping Yamaraj,"the god of death" on this day.

However, the modern form of celebration of Gai Jatra came into existence in the medieval period of Nepal during the reign of Malla Kings. The present form of Gai Jatra with humorous acts, parody, comedy and was started by then King of Kathmandu Pratap Malla. He made Rani Pokhari (Pond) in the heart of Kathmandu and build a temple in the middle of the same pond.

Traditionally every family who had death in the family during the preceding year must participate in a procession through the streets of Kathmandu leading a cow.

If a cow is unavailable then a young kids dressed as cow is considered a fair substitute. However, there started tradition of leading a cow with kids in funny costumes.

Nepal’s national anthem has ranked third in the BBC’s list of ‘Rio 2016: The most amazing national anthems’. Nepal’s national anthem ‘sayau thunga fulka hami’ (translated as we are hundreds of flowers) is the third most amazing national anthem in the top ten list prepared by the global broadcasting giant.

“Nepal’s isn’t your usual anthem. It doesn’t try to sound like a military march or a church hymn. Instead it sounds like a joyous Nepali pop song, the sort of music you hear blaring out of taxis in Kathmandu. It’s the only anthem normally played on a Casio keyboard, and it is so happy it’s somewhat unsettling to learn it was the product of a Maoist revolution,” Alex Marshall writes for BBC.

Marshall is the author of Republic or Death! Travels in Search of National Anthems.

National anthems of Russia and Myanmar have been ranked first and second in the list respectively.
