Overview

Sikkim is a small and charming tourist hub in the Eastern Himalayan range of India. It borders China to the East, Nepal to the West and south to the Indian state of West Bengal. Darjeeling shares it\'s boarder district with Sikkim in the north, Nepal in the West and Bhutan in the east. Darjeeling famous for it\'s natural beauty and vast stretches of lush green tea gardens, and only Himalayan Railway, known to the locals as the Toy Train, is now a world heritage which was listed in by the UNESCO in 1999. Riding on this train almost 88 km is not that faster way to get to Darjeeling from New Jalpaiguri but indeed a life time experience. The railway one the way to Darjeeling at Ghoom (2438m) is one of highest railway station in the world.

Kanchenjunga the world third highest peak which many of Sikkimese revered as the guardian deity attracts many thousand number of people each year from round the world. Darjeeling situated northern part of west Bengal, similar in geography that of Sikkim. Darjeeling shares it's boarder district with Sikkim in the north, Nepal in the West and Bhutan in the east. Mountain of Sikkim is famous for its rhododendron and orchids flowers, which blooms in spring. The Kanchanjunga range in the west and several snow-capped peaks to the north makes Sikkim a special place for tourist. It is rich in cultural heritage with mixed of Lepcha, Bhotia, Limbus and many other Nepalese ethnic groups. Budhist Gompas and Hindus shrines are everywhere in this tiny Himalayan State. Some of the best known monasteries are Ralong, Phodang, Rumtek, Phensong, Enchhey and Tashiding. Among them Rumtek is most popular monastery. Rumtek monastery is located 23 km. from Gangtok. It is the seat of the Kargyu order of Tibetan Buddhism. Gyalwa Karmapa, the 16th reincarnate Lama, built the monastery at Rumtek after he escaped from Tibet and settled in Sikkim. After Gyalwa Karmapa died 17thKarmapa was reborn in Tibet. Since then Rumtek monastery has become controvery for the actual Karmapa. Like Mani Rimdu in Thyangboche (Nepal), Rumtek monastery is famous for its ritual lama dance and opera performed by the lamas.

Sikkim was chosen by Padmasambhava, propagator and initiator of Tantric Buddhism in the Himalayan kingdom, as one of the valley (bey-yul) to preserve Buddhist scriptures for posterity. History of Buddhism in the Himalayan is incomplete without Sikkim.
Optional:
Tour in Sikkim make suitable combination with a short trek and cultural tour of Sikkim and Darjeeling. You can extend the tour to Nepal or travel by train to Delhi to visit Dharmasala to take to meet Dalai Lama.

Transportation: From Kathmandu, take the one hour flight to Bhadrapur (the nearest Nepalese airport to Darjeeling), drive to Kakarvitta (Nepal/Indian boarder 34km), to Silguri (36km) and to Darjeeling (77 km, about 2 ½ hrs drive). Darjeeling is also connected by road with Sikkim (120km) and Bhutan (200km). Darjeeling is about 90 km from Bagdogra, the nearest airport, where schedule flights operate from New Delhi, Calcutta and Guwahati The nearest rail heads are Siliguri and New Jalpaiguri (88km) which are connected to Calcutta, New Delhi, Guwahati and other major cities in India.

Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer from hotel to airport for Bhadrapur and proceed by car/coach to Gangtok via Teesta(4 hrs). Overnight at Gangtok.

Day 2: Full day Sightseeing of Tsangu Lake, Ganesh Tok, Hanuman Tok and Tashi view point.

Day 3: Sightseeing in Gangtok- visit Directorate of Handicrafts and Handlooms, Research Institute of Tibetology, Chortens (Stupa), Rumtek Monastery and Botanical Garden. Afternoon- Drive to Darjeeling. Overnight in Darjeeling.

Day 4: Sightseeing in Darjeeling-includes Tiger Hill, Batasia Loop, War Memorial, Ghoom Monastery, Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Par, Ropeway, Tea Garden (Rangeet valley).

Day 5: After breakfast drive for Bagdogra. Arrive Bagdogra and depart to next destination.
